A very haute collaboration

September 23, 2017 by Patricia

There are quite a number of styled stock photo libraries out there for fancy girl bosses like us, but very few have the quality and variety of Haute Stock (formerly Haute Chocolate).  It’s my secret weapon, really, for creating all the mockups and quote graphics that I share on social media and on my blog. I’ve been a happy subscriber to the Haute Stock library, and I was so thrilled when they tapped me to design their monthly graphics pack in October of last year. (Oh, and in case you don’t know, I also designed their new logo.)

Rachel (Haute Stock’s amazingly talented founder) and I discuss the theme for each month’s collection, and derive the inspiration for the graphics pack to match it. For example, for our very first month, the theme was pink and grey, and this is the graphics pack I designed:

There are icons, borders, backgrounds, and overlays.  Rachel also wanted me to add font suggestions for members to keep in mind when they create their own social media graphics.

I’ve had such a fun time since then, and look forward to designing more of them each month! Sometimes I paint the icons and backgrounds, other sets include digital illustrations.  There was a month when we only had various black and gold frames, and another time we had business icons that members can use on their sales pages.

You get such a great deal when you sign up to be a member – you don’t just get amazing images, you also get a graphics pack to match. It was so nice to hear after the latest members’ survey, that people have really found them useful.  Can’t wait to create more!

The custom monogram forms the letters H and A, but if you look at it long enough, you'll notice the curves of the letter A forms a letter L - which stands for Lisa, the founder's name.

The Ashcombe Hall has the gravity of a country house library, the kind of face you'd expect stamped in gold on a leather spine. Vintage Serenade moves looser, more lyrical, closer to something a calligrapher would have signed.
Design has swung this way before. When the Industrial Revolution made everything fast and identical, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with ornament, with craft, with the visible mark of the maker. The clean grid had its long turn at the wheel. This particular kind of type, textured, hand-cut, carrying a sense of history in the strokes, is having its own.
The antiques returning to people's living rooms and this type returning to branding are doing the same work. Both are reminding us a skilled hand was involved.
