There are thousands of handwritten fonts available in the market now, and I’ve gathered my list of the most beautiful ones. The term “handwritten” isn’t really a technical term as much as it is descriptive – it refers to typefaces that look like it’s been written by hand. For this blog post, I’m focusing on only cursive handwritten fonts with a casual feel, as opposed to the more fancy calligraphic fonts in my previous post.
Handwritten fonts/typefaces are great for evoking emotion and character, as well as creativity. They’ve become really trendy in recent years, and their popularity isn’t showing any signs of going away. As with any design detail, though, think about your message and your audience first. Handwritten fonts are not appropriate all the time or in all projects, no matter how pretty they may look. It’s not a fits-all solution. Don’t use them, for example, if you are designing for a serious, corporate audience. There are different ways you can use them: hero banners (not in the body text, ever), logo designs (where you don’t want a formal, corporate image), or in social media graphics (make sure the size is readable). Use them sparingly as they can be distracting, and watch out for scalability when using them on websites. And remember: keep everything else simple.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here are my top picks for the prettiest handwritten fonts available in the market. Notice that most of them are thin, and there aren’t many brush fonts in the list. That’s deliberate. I mostly categorize brush script fonts under a separate heading, and use those for really casual, edgy designs (or for portraying sarcasm in quotes). These 18 beautiful fonts are free-flowing but not fancy, and have a certain elegance without being formal.
