How could I say no? The nice people over at 8Durian asked me to try their durian delivery service in exchange for an honest review. Of course I said yes!
‘But durian is stinky!‘ – yes, yes it is, but only if you haven’t tried it yet. I used to think so too. My dad loves durian, and every time he ate some at home, I would hide in my room until every last smidgen of odour was gone. How did that change? Fast forward to 10 years ago when my husband, another durian fan, convinced me to cross over to the dark side and just close my nose & taste it. There was no going back after that. I was smitten!
So when I heard about Black Gold durian, an enhanced version of the premium Mao Shan Wang Durians, I knew I had to try it. The flesh of the durian is bitter sweet and has dark grey veins sporadically throughout the body. The taste is amazing! It’s like eating custard with a hint of coffee.
How is this cultivated? They select the oldest trees, and then further select only a handful of the best fruits and destroy the rest โ allowing this small portion of durians to not have to compete with other fruits for nutrients and sunlight.

I look at the pictures now and I’m already craving again. It was the absolute best durian I have ever tried. Bar none. The seeds were surprisingly small. I thought this would be just enough for my husband and I to finish, but it actually took some effort to finish the whole platter. haha!
They delivered the durian in chilled plastic containers that are further heat-sealed inside a clear plastic. Some of the smell still escaped though, and my boys still hid inside their bedroom just like I did when I was younger (and ignorant of the pleasures of eating durian). I love that it was nicely cold, but not frozen, so it was ready for eating right away. (I love my durian chilled.)
Will I order from them? Definitely. The hype is well-deserved.
