Fancy Girl (Shopping) Finds

June 21, 2016 by Patricia

Shopping picks from Mango and Pretty Ballerinas. By Fancy Girl

It’s not easy to shop when you’re on the curvy side. At least, not if you still want to be stylish and also not spend a fortune. I’m not one to follow fashion trends zealously; my style is very classic and pared down, and once I find a brand that offers styles and sizes that I like, I normally stay loyal for years. Which means that when you open my closet now, you will probably find only two brands: Violeta by Mango, and Marks & Spencer. Boring, I know. Add to that the fact that 90% of my clothes are black!

I actually panicked when I received my newsletter from Mango announcing their 50% off sale! They had pieces that I placed in my shopping cart and vowed to purchase when I had the budget. Now they were half off! And sadly also out of my size. huhuhu.  But I was so happy to get one out of 3, the off shoulder one in black, with a skinny studded belt. The fit is amazing and the design is very flattering! I can’t wait to wear it. Methinks my husband needs to take me out on a date soon!

I was thinking of pairing it with pointy flats from Pretty Ballerinas.  (I swear by this brand. They are super comfy and I can walk in them for hours.) While I love the black one with gold criss-crossing straps, the pink bow one above is calling my name. And I have the perfect bag to pair it with too!

What do you think? The pink or the black?

Positioning is a decision.
You don’t wait to be selected by whoever inquires. You choose.
Choose who you want to work with, what you want to be known for, and how you want your business to be perceived.
That’s positioning.

The custom monogram forms the letters H and A, but if you look at it long enough, you'll notice the curves of the letter A forms a letter L - which stands for Lisa, the founder's name.

The Ashcombe Hall has the gravity of a country house library, the kind of face you'd expect stamped in gold on a leather spine. Vintage Serenade moves looser, more lyrical, closer to something a calligrapher would have signed.
Design has swung this way before. When the Industrial Revolution made everything fast and identical, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with ornament, with craft, with the visible mark of the maker. The clean grid had its long turn at the wheel. This particular kind of type, textured, hand-cut, carrying a sense of history in the strokes, is having its own.
The antiques returning to people's living rooms and this type returning to branding are doing the same work. Both are reminding us a skilled hand was involved.
