Hello gorgeous! How are you today? I’m still recovering from the flu, but feeling much better than I did yesterday.
I am so excited to feature this recently completed project. Bake Happy is a very popular baking and cake decorating blog. Aikko, the owner of the blog, shares a lot of easy to make recipes and step by step instructions on cake decorating. She wanted the site to have a fun, sweet, and whimsical look, with lots of hand-drawn watercolor elements. But she didn’t want it to look at all cluttered — we both agreed that the overall look still had to be clean and organized.
It was fun working with Aikko because she’s also an artist and is able to give specific directions. She has a flair for combining fonts as well, and had very definite ideas on how everything should look.
After the initial discussion and analysis of her mood board, I started off by drawing some elements on paper. These were going to be used in her design. Her color palette has a lot of hues on it, but it works because they are sweet, and used sparingly throughout the site.
The theme I designed for her is mobile-responsive, and built on the Genesis Framework. She posts a lot of amazing food pictures, so we made sure that her content area was wide enough to allow the photos to shine. Aikko also wanted to make sure that the site was easy to navigate, with a menu bar that was easy for her to update.
I’m so happy with how it came out, and even happier that Aikko loves it! This was so much fun to work on because it combined my love for illustrations with the technical challenge that came with translating the design into code.
