This wordpress blog design project was a huge departure from my usual style. Didi, the site owner of D for Delicious, is a former client who came back for a redesign late last year. She blogs about the expat life and her adventures in the kitchen at dfordelicious.com. Her previous theme design was whimsical and fun, but she wanted a more mature and serious look this time, that would reflect changes in her purpose and personality. She gave me two keywords: pretty yet gritty. But she also wanted lots of white space and fonts that were easy to read.
We worked on two options for her logo.
The first one includes a calligraphy design for the site name, which I paired with a typewriter font for the tagline. She found it too pretty, and not gritty enough. So I designed another one using brush lettering with an icon that was also drawn in watercolor. She picked the second one.
Here is the mood board that I came up with for her theme.
We decided (I use we because I work closely with my clients on every design project) to use handwritten fonts on the headers to tie up the look. I picked out this easy to read font called Loved by the King from Google webfonts. It’s really nice because it’s quirky and looks like real handwriting, but is still easy to read. An absolute must for websites and blogs. Her body text is a simple sans-serif. As requested, there are lots of white space all around, so her content gets to shine.
