It’s the weekend! Yay! I know I’m not supposed to blog or do any work, but this is too exciting not to share! I treated myself to a rare afternoon nap today, so I’m feeling rejuvenated. I haven’t had a nap in a looong time! It was glorious! Anyway, I wanted to share this recent design project I did for makeitblissful.com, the online magazine/blog of Martine de Luna. Martine is a very special client. She was one of my first ever clients for wordpress, and I’ve worked with her for 5 years! Every year we would redesign her blog, and every year she gives me the most exciting project ever. It helps that our aesthetic sensibilities are very much aligned, making it a joy to work with her. She always gives me the design work that I dream of doing at that moment. We didn’t even do a design questionnaire or mood board this time. She just told me what she wanted and 4 days later, her new design is up!
Her newest redesign is full of so many features, but is still extremely chic and clean, with lots of white space. I started by redesigning her logo. We decided to prettify it by making it pink, and adding some rose gold.
The theme is completely mobile responsive, of course, and built on the powerful Genesis Framework, like all my WordPress themes. This one is one of the few that I’ve custom-coded, putting in tons of features and functions. There is a custom widget area below the header, showing her top categories as image links. We used her own photographs, which are fabulous! The typography is clean and light, just like Martine wanted, adjusting for letter spacing and line height to get the feel that she likes — but we made sure that the body text was still easy to read. I see a lot of blogs now with really minuscule font sizes and although it looks really chic, it’s not very friendly to people with bad eyesight, or those with retina screens. (Just saying.)
