Font Crush: Very Berry

November 6, 2014 by Patricia

If you don’t already know, I have a thing for pretty fonts.  I can’t go to myfonts.com without buying a font or two. Or three.  My name is Patricia and I’m a font addict. There. I said it! One of these days I will sit down and catalogue my fonts and sort them according to style and genre.  It’s become increasingly difficult to keep track of all of them, that I sometimes forget if I already own a font or not. It’s that bad!

My newest font crush has the cutest name ever! Very Berry. Don’t you just love it?! I found it on creativemarket.com and just had to have it.  It’s a gorgeous handwritten font that’s perfect for so many things! You need an open-type aware application to make the most of it, so if you buy it, make sure you have Photoshop and/or Illustrator, otherwise you won’t be able to use the full set of glyphs.

It even looks great on a chalkboard graphic!

Here’s something I created using Very Berry. I heard this quote from The Good Life Project podcast, and I thought it was such a powerful message, so I’d like to share it with you. I made a high-resolution graphic for this, that you can download and print if you like. The size is 8×10 inches.   You may download the free printable simply by clicking on the image.

Positioning is a decision.
You don’t wait to be selected by whoever inquires. You choose.

That’s positioning.

The custom monogram forms the letters H and A, but if you look at it long enough, you'll notice the curves of the letter A forms a letter L - which stands for Lisa, the founder's name.

The Ashcombe Hall has the gravity of a country house library, the kind of face you'd expect stamped in gold on a leather spine. Vintage Serenade moves looser, more lyrical, closer to something a calligrapher would have signed.
Design has swung this way before. When the Industrial Revolution made everything fast and identical, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with ornament, with craft, with the visible mark of the maker. The clean grid had its long turn at the wheel. This particular kind of type, textured, hand-cut, carrying a sense of history in the strokes, is having its own.
The antiques returning to people's living rooms and this type returning to branding are doing the same work. Both are reminding us a skilled hand was involved.
