Font Crush: Walbaum

April 15, 2021 by Patricia

The talented designers over at Monotype restored Walbaum, a classic typeface, and made it more modern. But while other modern fonts project minimalism, Walbaum projects luxury and high style. This was release in 2018, and I have been crushing on it since. I’m just waiting for the right project to come along so I can use it!

Walbaum font

Walbaum comes in 69 styles, various weights, from thin to extra black, with other styles like inline and decorative. The range is amazing! My only complaint is having to select each font individually rather than having all the options fall under the main one. But that’s minor! This font is gorgeous.

Fashion can be bought, style one must possess.

The custom monogram forms the letters H and A, but if you look at it long enough, you'll notice the curves of the letter A forms a letter L - which stands for Lisa, the founder's name.

The Ashcombe Hall has the gravity of a country house library, the kind of face you'd expect stamped in gold on a leather spine. Vintage Serenade moves looser, more lyrical, closer to something a calligrapher would have signed.
Design has swung this way before. When the Industrial Revolution made everything fast and identical, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with ornament, with craft, with the visible mark of the maker. The clean grid had its long turn at the wheel. This particular kind of type, textured, hand-cut, carrying a sense of history in the strokes, is having its own.
The antiques returning to people's living rooms and this type returning to branding are doing the same work. Both are reminding us a skilled hand was involved.
