Healing InSight

July 11, 2020 by Patricia

PROJECT: PROFESSIONAL WEBSITE DESIGN WITH ADD-ONS

Healing Insight is a natural medicine clinic in St. Paul, Minnesota founded in 2008 by Senia Mae Tuominen, a licensed acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner.  Senia Mae wanted a website that reflected her clinic’s aesthetic as well as her own personal style. We wanted to capture just how it feels when a patient comes into her clinic. Thankfully, Senia invested in fantastic professional photos that really matched her brand!

When we launched her site, Senia told me:

I’ve been showing everyone my site and my best friend said, “This is So You! This is exactly what it feels like to come to your clinic!!!” That’s exactly what I was going for!! Everyone’s in agreement that you nailed it!!!

It was crucial that the website be fully optimized for mobile viewing, and not just responsive. Certain elements in each of the pages are designed differently for better readability.

They wanted to incorporate a lot of information on all of the pages, so a strategic layout was important. To make user experience pleasant, I simplified the flow, and made sure each section was easy to read & easy to navigate. A busy webpage needs lots of white space to allow the eye to rest, and a clear & consistent layout makes it easy to figure things out. Wherever it was possible to condense the copy, we worked with her copywriter to make sure everything was concise, clear, and effective.

Every element on the website was carefully and intentionally planned and designed. Do check it out!

Positioning is a decision.
You don’t wait to be selected by whoever inquires. You choose.
Choose who you want to work with, what you want to be known for, and how you want your business to be perceived.
That’s positioning.

The custom monogram forms the letters H and A, but if you look at it long enough, you'll notice the curves of the letter A forms a letter L - which stands for Lisa, the founder's name.
We wanted the brand to look and feel premium but welcoming, as befits her years of experience and level of expertise.
The typefaces surfacing this week share a theme: n The typefaces surfacing this week share a theme: not serifs broadly, but a specific vintage register, letterforms with visible weight variation, a slightly worn edge, the sense that someone drew them by hand.
The Ashcombe Hall has the gravity of a country house library, the kind of face you'd expect stamped in gold on a leather spine. Vintage Serenade moves looser, more lyrical, closer to something a calligrapher would have signed.
Design has swung this way before. When the Industrial Revolution made everything fast and identical, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with ornament, with craft, with the visible mark of the maker. The clean grid had its long turn at the wheel. This particular kind of type, textured, hand-cut, carrying a sense of history in the strokes, is having its own.
The antiques returning to people's living rooms and this type returning to branding are doing the same work. Both are reminding us a skilled hand was involved.
