Last month, I attended this amazing workshop given by Esther Peck, an artist I follow in Instagram. She is so talented, I get blown away by each of her posts! I have always wanted to learn from her, but her workshops were mostly held on weekends, and I try keep weekends solely for family time. Well, she offered a few workshops during the middle of the week, so I finally attended one!
Esther is so patient, and you can tell how much she cares about her students learning the skills properly. She is very methodical and really pays attention to what each student needs to work on in order to improve. I only spent close to 3 hours with her, and I learned so much!
Esther pointed out that I had been using too much water when I paint, so I did my best to correct that. She also shared some tips on the best brushes to use, as well as the specific techniques for each type of flower.
This style of painting doesn’t come naturally to me, so I really struggled. My personal preference is toward more structured lines and figures. Like this one:
But I was determined to learn, so I’ve been practicing a lot since that day. I finally got to use what I learned when I painted the April graphics pack for Haute Chocolate, and came up with a spring-themed set filled with various flowers, and some cakes and bunnies too! I’m so proud of myself! haha!
Watercolor painting is so rewarding. You see the results of your efforts within seconds — although you also have only a few seconds to correct your mistakes! But it is so fun to learn! I still have one more workshop with Esther, and I’m excited to learn more from her. If you want to check out her work, follow her on Instagram at estherpeck. She is so good, you’ll be inspired to try too.
