DEBRA WINSTON DESIGN

PROJECT TYPE:
  • BASIC LOGO DESIGN
  • CUSTOM WEBSITE DESIGN

INDUSTRY: INTERIOR DESIGN
LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO BAY, CALIFORNIA

Debra Winston Design specializes in thoughtful interior design for San Francisco South Bay and Peninsula homes. As a former textile designer for Ralph Lauren, Debra Winston brings a unique approach to her projects, and is known for her wonderful eye for color, as well as for a very relaxed California sensibility. She works with clients who are entering a new chapter - empty nesters, or busy professionals with growing kids.

She initially approached me to redesign her old DIY website but gradually realized that she needed a new brand identity as well. We redesigned her logo to reflect her status as an award-winning designer while keeping it relaxed, approachable, and personal. Having developed a color palette and typography system, we then curated her numerous projects and hand picked those that show off her amazing skills and approach.

LOGO DESIGN

Her logo features a custom monogram that is designed from her own signature. The two dots on either side of the W are actually letter Ds. The colors and the typography system are all chosen with intention, to reflect the relaxed, but elevated style that Debra needed.

I made sure Debra had a proper system for creating marketing materials and client guides using her new brand.

WEBSITE DESIGN

dwd-launch-1

Working closely together, Debra and I made sure her website had the same feel as her brand overall - relaxed, full of color, warmth, and a lived-in luxury. We showcased her use of premium materials in her work, how she designed based on her clients's lifestyles and tastes, and the sunny, California aesthetic that you see in everything she touches. The transformation is dramatic.

This was her website before:

This is her website now: polished, welcoming, easy to navigate, showcasing her work properly.

Here's what Debra had to say:

"Patricia came highly recommended, and she did not disappoint! She was incredibly helpful in guiding me through the process with clarity and kindness, helping me discover and define my brand voice through her thoughtful guides. This led to developing the perfect logo, and helped me narrow down to only the best projects to feature.

The process of working with Patricia was genuinely fun during our Zoom meetings to strategize and clarify—she really brings a lovely energy to her work. Patricia is not only talented but also incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. When I saw everything come together in the first wireframe version, my eyes teared up with emotion. She presented me and my work better than I could have imagined! I am beyond thrilled!!!"

Positioning is a decision.
You don’t wait to be selected by whoever inquires. You choose.
Choose who you want to work with, what you want to be known for, and how you want your business to be perceived.
That’s positioning.
A bold, dramatic, editorial-inspired brand identit A bold, dramatic, editorial-inspired brand identity for a psychology-informed company that is centered on people.
The custom monogram forms the letters H and A, but if you look at it long enough, you'll notice the curves of the letter A forms a letter L - which stands for Lisa, the founder's name.
We wanted the brand to look and feel premium but welcoming, as befits her years of experience and level of expertise.
The typefaces surfacing this week share a theme: n The typefaces surfacing this week share a theme: not serifs broadly, but a specific vintage register, letterforms with visible weight variation, a slightly worn edge, the sense that someone drew them by hand.
The Ashcombe Hall has the gravity of a country house library, the kind of face you'd expect stamped in gold on a leather spine. Vintage Serenade moves looser, more lyrical, closer to something a calligrapher would have signed.
Design has swung this way before. When the Industrial Revolution made everything fast and identical, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with ornament, with craft, with the visible mark of the maker. The clean grid had its long turn at the wheel. This particular kind of type, textured, hand-cut, carrying a sense of history in the strokes, is having its own.
The antiques returning to people's living rooms and this type returning to branding are doing the same work. Both are reminding us a skilled hand was involved.
