I had the distinct privilege to be one of the speakers at the recently concluded She Rises Summit, a one-day series of (online) workshops aimed to teach women how to start a business from scratch. The summit was the brainchild of Melody Bay of Fresh Pages Co, who introduced the idea to fellow members of the Singapore Rising Tide Society, and we all enthusiastically said yes!

From the website’s home page:
We want to give back to our community by helping our fellow women get their business ideas off the ground. In this summit, you’ll learn both the mindset and practical skills necessary to start your very first business. Best of all? It’s completely free!
All the speakers are creative female entrepreneurs who started a business from scratch. We come from all over the world, but most of us are based in Singapore. It was our way of giving back, by teaching young women what we’ve learned.
STYLING YOUR VISUAL BRAND
I was really excited to teach them how to style their visual brand – when you’re just starting out, it’s unlikely that you can afford to invest in a professional brand identity design. But there is no reason why you can’t put together one for yourself. In a 45-minute crash course, I tried to teach the basics of brand identity styling, from using your brand strategy to determine the right mood, colour palette, typography system, graphic elements, and photography style.

There were a few technical glitches (my firewall somehow blocked screensharing on the webinar portal!), but we soldiered on! lol. This is a topic I totally nerd out on, so the challenge was how to keep my talk short enough to fit my allotted time.
I stayed on the whole day, and really enjoyed listening to the other speakers so much! The most engaging one was definitely the talk on presentation skills by Peilin Lee. She had us close to singing Disney songs and pretending to speak whale, like Dory! (You had to have been there.) I learned so much from the other talks – I really do think my friends should start selling courses based on their expertise because they were all so fantastic. To think we planned all this without physically meeting. And it was all thanks to this amazing group of women, but most especially because of the tireless efforts of Melody and the committee. They deserve an award for this, truly.
