Floral Typography

August 11, 2015 by Patricia 1 Comment

Bloom where you are planted. This is a design trend that I absolutely fell for. Naturally I had to try making one of my own.  Florals + typography = perfectly fancy! Wouldn't this be great as a logo?   … [Read more...] about Floral Typography

Font Crush: Ondise

May 4, 2015 by Patricia Leave a Comment

Ondise is a super pretty brush lettering font that works really well with whimsical, rustic, hand-painted graphics, like those made by Rifle Paper Co.  (You know the style!)  It's curvy, friendly, and has a natural baseline (i.e. not perfectly straight).  I love that even if it has a very rustic … [Read more...] about Font Crush: Ondise

THE WORD

September 23, 2014 by Patricia Leave a Comment

I haven't been able to get this quote out of my mind since I read it last week at Marie Forleo's Facebook page.  I do think that before you should concern yourself with SEO tricks or marketing, you should first try to be good at what you do.  Be an authority, create work that matters, make … [Read more...] about THE WORD

Font Crush: Quickpen

August 20, 2014 by Patricia 1 Comment

If you're looking for a handwritten font that doesn't look like calligraphy, you will love Quickpen!  There's a nice roughness to the strokes that makes it look like actual handwriting. I love that it's still easy to read, and has a nice slant to it.  Or maybe I'm just biased because it … [Read more...] about Font Crush: Quickpen

Of Illustrations and Technology

July 29, 2014 by Patricia Leave a Comment

After a gazillion years, my scanner is finally working!!!!  Can you see me jumping for joy?! I bought one of those all-in-one printer/scanner/copier machines a while back, but it wasn't compatible with the new version of Mac OSX.  When I upgraded my iMac earlier this year to the new one, … [Read more...] about Of Illustrations and Technology

Design your life

July 3, 2014 by Patricia Leave a Comment

"Little by little, step by step, design the life you want to live." I just love this quote! I saw it on a graphic being shared on facebook, and I wish I knew who wrote it.  Isn't it true though? It's not going to happen in an instant, but if you live your life with intention (this seems to be the … [Read more...] about Design your life

The World Needs Your Message

June 12, 2014 by Patricia Leave a Comment

Truth. It was heartening to read this on Jeff Goin's latest newsletter. I've always been hesitant to write because of lack of confidence. Oh, I know how to write a scientific article, and I've even published a few, but blogging is different. When I was just blogging for friends and … [Read more...] about The World Needs Your Message

New week, new look!!! I am so excited to unveil t New week, new look!!!

I am so excited to unveil the brand new look for Fancy Girl Design Studio. I've had the same logo since 2015, and while I still love it, it was high time to do a refresh to a much more sophisticated, established look to match my current brand message.

It's challenging to be objective about your own brand, and so I turned to @pinkpineapplebranding to help me sort through my strategy for this brand refresh. I found this gorgeous image of an Upper East Side building on Instagram, and knew. That's it, that's how I want my brand to look. Like it belongs there. Anna knew exactly where I should take my visuals, and although I hemmed and hawed at first (what? no more pink and black?!), I eventually got there!

Going through the entire process that I guide my own clients along made sure I didn't cut any corners. I even tried generating a brand palette using AI to check if I was on the right track. (Swipe to see it). I disagreed with the actual shades (not refined enough for me), but the colours are close.

So what do you think of the new brand colors?

Ok so I was going to wait until my new website was Ok so I was going to wait until my new website was ready before I shared this, but I’m not very good at being patient! 🤣 I just LOVE LOVE LOVE my new brand photos taken by @zebrajojophotography - she really understood what I was trying to convey, and we just went all in. 💖💖💖

It took a lot of planning to pull off a huge shoot like this, as well as help from @gayathri.menon to make me look fab, and the brilliant @pinkpineapplebranding to push me to do this in the first place!

And if you’re new here, hello! I’m Patricia, international brand and web designer and creative director for female-led creative brands. I’m currently obsessed with chinoiserie, magnolias, hand-rolled hems on silk scarves, freshly sharpened pencils, Star Trek, and pearls. Not necessarily in that order! 😄 I believe pink is a neutral, that world problems will be solved by science and working together, and that bad design causes unhappiness. If we haven’t chatted yet, say hello and tell me about you!

With the popularity of quiet luxury in fashion aro With the popularity of quiet luxury in fashion arose a similar trend in graphic design: that of classic, high-end magazine inspired typefaces.

These have a quiet confidence with them, eschewing the need for swashes or any unnecessary decorative elements in favor of clean tailored lines. They're the font equivalents of a beige silk shirt tucked into tailored black trousers.

Which one is your favorite?

What makes a luxury brand? Why are people willing What makes a luxury brand?

Why are people willing to wait months for a Birkin? Why does a vintage Gucci hand-rolled silk scarf still fetch high prices?

So many brands use the term 'luxury' in their description, and frankly, it has diluted the meaning of the word. Just because you charge high rates for your service or product does not mean that you are necessarily a luxury brand. It helps, but it's not the only marker.

Here are 5 features that distinguish luxury brands from the rest, and the reasons why they command respect and have a market willing to pay their sky high prices.

Are you trying to position yourself as a luxury brand? Which of these features have you been working on? What has worked for you? Let's discuss!

The new website for interior and landscape design The new website for interior and landscape design firm @garlanddesigngroup is launching soon and I am beyond thrilled to share it! It has a very modern, immersive feel, with large images intended to showcase their unique way of blending the indoors and the outdoors in a unified design.

The typography design of the headings mimics that of their logo - very minimalist, but using different weights for emphasis and style.

As usual, @masha.koyen did a fanstastic job with the copywriting - it was a joy thinking of beautiful ways to design the user experience around it.

Happy to be back to work after that short, one wee Happy to be back to work after that short, one week vacation! I was on the verge of burnout and desperately needed the break.

How often do you take time to recharge? As a creative and an entrepreneur, taking breaks doesn't come easy to me - I feel guilty somehow. In fact, I even took my laptop with me! But I kept reminding myself of the quote: 'You can't fill from an empty cup.'

📸 by the amazing @zebrajojophotography - part of my own rebranding that has been in the pipeline since early this year. I need to hire myself so this gets done!
